Bible Study ~ Hidden Joy ~ Day 3

Day 3 Task:
Read chapter 1 which, honestly, is hard to read.  Wendy tells the story of her rape. She doesn’t hold back, she shares this for what it was. And she shares her doubts and fears. She shares the ugliness and loss of  life as she knows it in her experience.  As you read, use your highlighter to highlight things that stick out in your mind or you may want to return to later.  Write a prayer for your sisters who are also in this study with you.   It sure will be encouraging to read all those prayers for each other!

My post after reading Chapter 1:
Just finished chapter 1, oh I can’t even describe what I am feeling now, my heart is pounding, I feel sick, I feel sad, angry and wanting to run away!!! But if Wendy can live through it and write about I can at least read it. Sometimes I think it’s good that I blocked out my childhood abuse only certain smells, touches and places bring it into detail. Interesting is I can’t remember much but all Wendy’s behavior I have had ally life: fear if dark, not ever being alone, never taking a shower if I was alone and the last paragraph of the chapter could have been wrote by me!!! I have had nightmares my whole life, waking up screaming but once I am awake I just remember the fear–I can’t recall the dream! I will be back with my prayer for my sisters in Christ I just need to take a break right now.

Melissa posted this for us ladies today:
Two weeks ago in church, my pastor taught about 3 excuses we often give instead of trusting God and being obedient to Him. I’m not going to go into details about the whole message, but these excuses are the same ones I used for years instead of moving forward.
“I’m not worthy.”
“It’s too hard.”
“Not now.”

Some of you may be feeling this way about this study.  You think that hope and healing aren’t for you. Here’s what my pastor had to say about that:
  • “Holiness is not what God wants from me, it is what He wants for me.”  Worthiness not required. We don’t have it and God doesn’t need it.  It’s only because of Him in us that we can be called worthy in the first place.
  • “We go to the wrong sources to find fulfillment”   and when we get there we are still empty!  Sure it’s hard, but until we finally give into God, it’s never going to get easier or better.  We will be missing something.
  • “God doesn’t want to change you in the future, He wants to change you NOW.”  Like in today.
This community is here for you.  This community cannot save you, heal you, or fix your problems.  This community can encourage you, love you, support you, and pray for you.  As a part of this community, I ask you to take ownership of this Bible study.  Make friends, be real, and open your heart to God.  Monday, you were asked to write a prayer for yourself.  I hope you will make it a habit to prayer for yourself.  It’s important.  (Gotta put your oxygen mask on first before you can be of help to anyone else!)

Melissa's Prayer for the study participants:
To My Loving Father,
I am overwhelmed and in awe of this group that you have brought together.  I celebrate the work You will do in their lives through the transforming power of Your Word.  Lord, for each and every person in this study, I pray:
*for hope to become real
*for her to believe that healing is possible for her
*for her to give You the control over her life
*that she know she is loved
*that she know she is valued
*that she open her heart, let You in
*that the walls of shame, fear, rejection, and unworthiness are broken down and remain down
*that she would turn to You for shelter and refuge and she will find You at every turn in her life
*that she feels Your love, acceptance, and sweet desire for her to have a full life
*that she finds her joy and will proceed through her life depending on You and living free.
In Jesus’ Sweet Precious Name, I pray, Amen.

My Notes:
I loved Melissa's prayer for all of us, I cried as I read it all the way through!
Reading chapter one was very hard and several times I put it down and wanted to run far away. The only thing that got me through was thinking if Wendy can live through it and write about it I can at least read it but I so wanted to quit!!!!... I wrote more on the blog but I think after several years if no emotion, not even being able to cry I am very close to crying at any minute just thinking about what hell she endured and that for our benefit she relived to help us break free....thank you Wendy and Melissa ♥. No words can express accurately what I am feeling right now.
Through the day as I read kept reading the posts I just kept saying over and over.....how exactly alike we really were in our emotions, behaviors, fears and putting up walls so high not even the LORD could take them down until we were ready for Him to help us remove them.

My prayer for all of us:
Dear LORD, I pray for each and every one of us who are taking this journey together. I ask for healing ~ healing from fear, shame, anger, loneliness, isolation but mostly I pray that we are able to put our trust in You. I pray that the walls we have built up to keep ourselves from hurting again crumble and that Your love will guide us through. Little did we know when we built those walls so high we were not only keeping out pain but keeping out love, joy, life and mostly You! We need You to remove our walls and to infuse us with hope! So many of us frozen in fear right now even though in our minds we know that is the enemy keeping us from You, please gather us in Your arms so that we feel Your strength, comfort and love so that we may continue on this journey together. LORD bless each one of us, shower us in Your love, peace and mercy. Give us what we need to be able to lay our pains, fears and anxiety at Your cross. LORD be gentle with us, yet forceful enough that we gain strength as we go and that the demons in our past lose all power. I thank You LORD for Melissa and Wendy, for their answering Your call with a resounding “Yes” to guide us through our own nightmares and prisons. Glory be the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now and shall ever be a world without end. Amen.

Just going back over some of the posts from the women who are going through the Bible Study together (over 3,000!!!!) ~ it just hit me for so long I felt so alone, like no one would understand the emptiness and the hole left inside me but reading those posts makes me realize more women than I ever imagined are living with the same emptiness, and some of them are soooo much older than I am and they are just now deciding to take back their life and live. I don't want to waste another day let alone another year with the emptiness inside me.  I am motivated to finish this through to the end and to come out on the other side to the light and the love of Jesus!!!!

Bible Study - Hidden Joy in a Dark Corner ~ Day 2

Monday- Read the sections of Hidden Joy, titled “With Gratitude…” and “Our Journey BEGINS.” After reading, record in your journal your thoughts about proceeding through this study. What do you hope to gain through this study?  What are your doubts about going through this study?  Fears?  What is your goal?  Record a prayer for yourself. Write honestly to God. Be real, no masks, no hiding.  If you are willing, share your prayer for yourself on Melissa’s blog today, but if you want to keep it between you and God, that’s totally fine too!  It’s good to pray for yourself. Don’t ever feel selfish about doing that.  In John17, Jesus prays for himself, His disciples, then for future believers.  He begins with Himself. If it’s good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for us!

I have been putting off my assignment today ~ never a good sign.  I have had lots to do today and the day has flown by but I still could have completed it first thing this morning.  Will be going to work on my assignment right now......

Scripture today:  I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.  Ezekiel 36:26

Parts of the book that stood out to me:
  • In this book, I will share the lessons I learned from God's incredible story: the Bible.  My prayer is that you too will see that His story is not merely a book but a love letter written especially for you.  Hmmm, I think I have heard this from somewhere before.  God has been preparing me for this journey for awhile now....."love letters from God" was first whispered into my soul by a dear friend back in November.
  • As you journey through this book, open your heart to what God has to speak to you.
  • God led you to choose this book because He has a personal message for you, powerful Truths He wants to teach you, amazing love He wants to reveal to you, everlasting hope He wants to offer you.  Listen for His voice.  Search for the blessings hidden in your brokenness.  Are you ready? Again hmmmm, these things have been shared with me by that same dear friend in addition to another dear friend (my twin, I like to call her lol) they were the messengers God used to plow my heart and prepare me for this.....Thank You LORD and thank you friends for readily accepting your role in my healing.
Thoughts on proceeding with this study:  I am nervous but mostly eager and excited to put this behind me once and for all.  I feel like I have been working up to this moment for months.  I feel like  am exactly where I am supposed to be.

What do I hope to gain:  I hope to gain a sense of self, a confidence I have never had.  I want to see my marriage (all aspects) as a true gift from God.

What are my doubts:  That I won't finish it to the end once I get uncomfortable.

Fears:  That it will be painful and make things worse.

My goal:  To no longer live in fear!

Prayer for myself:
Dear LORD, I come to You asking for Your arms of love, protection and mercy to hold me as I go through this process of healing. I have tried so many times before to be healed of this but it just seemed to make me sadder. I am so ready to be rid of all the guilt, shame, anger, hurt and the constant emptiness inside of me. I ask You LORD to please strengthen me, guide me and keep me within Your arms as I start this journey. I ask You to show me all my blessings and to remove all evil from my heart, mind and soul. Show me that I can let go ~ I have carried this for so long even though I am sick of it, it’s scary to let go of soemthing that has defined me forever. I ask You to restore me to the living; show me who I am in You; show me my worth; show me how special I am just as I am – that I don’t have to be like anyone else, that I can be me and that who I am is good enough; help me to trust (posting this is my first step in learning to trust); define me in Your eyes and not as a victim. Change me, create in me Your love. Help me to lay it all at Your feet so that in You I am for the first time made whole. Help me to turst in Your word and Your promises. And keep me forever within your shelter. Amen.

I am not a writer and especially of prayers, sometimes I just can’t get it into words what I want to express. But if I am going to learn to live, I am going to learn to trust so as hard as it is for me to put something I wrote on a website that anyone can read I am doing it trusting in the LORD that it doesn’t sound stupid, childish or idiotic. I can’t believe I am doing this so before I change my mind I am hitting submit!!!

Bible Study - Hidden Joy in a Dark Corner ~ Day 1

Today is Day 1 of the online Bible Study "Hidden Joy in a Dark Corner"

I am feeling nervous, uncomfortable, excited, anxious, relieved!!!  Could this possibility be the start of being free???  I truly pray so....  Will I start AND finish this (because I have started many bible studies but never finished them)  I truly pray so....

Words of the week:  FEAR and DECIDE
  • Many of us are ruled by fear. It paralyzes us. It keeps us from moving forward. We are scared and afraid. And we have good reason!  Take a deep breath my sweet friend.  Let’s all hold hands in cyber space.  Join together.  Eyes up. Lift them up to the Lord. If our eyes are on Jesus, then they aren’t on our fear. Let’s decide to trust.  Let’s decide to believe.  We can do it. We have God. We have each other. Let’s encourage and pray for one another.  Here we go.

Scripture for this week:
  • John 16:33-“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
  • John 14:1-Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” (believe=trust)
  • John 14:27- “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
  • Matthew 19:26- Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
  • Isaiah 43:18-19 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  See, I am doing a new thing!  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?  I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
  • Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1b)
Here are some of what I am feeling and what some of the other comments brought to surface for me:
  • I am ready to get started on this but have to admit to being very nervous and uncomfortable. My personality is if something makes me uncomfortable then I run away and ignore it hoping for it to go away, I pray I stick with this and finish it to the end, if so it will be the first thing I have ever accomplished 100 percent. Also I will apologize now for typos, will be posting mostly from my phone and it has a mind of it’s own!!! Praying for everyone that is taking part in this journey!!!
  • Thank you….I really appreciate it!!! I always start out with good intentions but if I don’t do something perfectly or it makes me uncomfortable I give up!!! I am tired of feeling like a failure in every role of my life. The abuse happened for several years and I repressed the memory until after both of my children were born. It has greatly affected my marriage for all 20 years that i have been married. I decided in April that 30+ years of shame, fear, guilt, anger, and an empty place in my soul was enough.
  • Thank you…..never thought of it that way! I like that: Nervous and uncomfortable is ok, more dependent on God I will remember that once those feelings hit high gear!
  • I get what you are saying bc there are so many days where I dint feel anything; I dont feel joy or sadness….only an emptiness I me, some days I think if only I could at least cry about something maybe I would start feeling some emotions but I can’t even cry–I try to think of the saddest memory I have (the death of my mother) to help me cry and there is nothing there!!! I pray that together we all can learn to allow healing but more importantly living to happen to us.
  • I know exactly what you mean when you say you sometimes don’t know who you are. That is exactly where I am. For a long time I could pretend b/c I had small children who took every minute of my day. I have an autistic son who needed me so much I knew exactly who I was ~ I was the mother of an autistic child! And it was my responsibility to get him through school and to graduate. I never thought what it would mean once he did graduate. I was also mother to a daughter who was a miracle baby and who struggled through school b/c of dyslexia. Then on August 14 of last year my baby girl went off to college and although my son at 21 still needed me, he didn’t need me as much so I found myself with A LOT of time on my hands and no way to stop the memories. My husband didn’t understand when I said to him one day “I just don’t know who I AM and it’s scaring me” and he said “you are my wife” and I thought “yes I am your wife but I need to know who I AM outside of M’s mom and M’s mom and your wife” so here I am……. I hope to learn to be secure in who I am, but I also hope to learn how to define myself other than wife, mother and abuse victim.
  • I thank you so much for offering this study. Funny, I am nervous and uncomfortable but in so many ways I am happier than I have ever been just knowing I am finally able to do something about something that happened to me 30+ years ago…I can finally take control of it and then turn it over to God so I don’t have to carry it around anymore. Wow, I am so ready!!!!
Some of the comments that got me to thinking and that have helped me so far:
  • YOU ARE WORTHY! Feeling are so fickle. You have to decide what you believe, not what you feel. What you have been through is difficult, but it’s not who you are or what defines you.
Go through this study, taking one day at a time. Ask God to bring the belief to you. I will be praying for you.
  • I’m so glad you are doing this study! You can do it! Stay with it my sweet friend. Nervous and uncomfortable is ok. It just makes you more dependent on God.
